Woman Ironing Degas, National Museum of Liverpool It comes down to this. A woman labors under the strain of domesticity, employs flat metal to smooth linens, stiffened by every word he spits: “Slut, Whore, Dung.” Each hard vowel belies the ruffle on a dressing gown cuff. They line up to use her services. She washes each sheet, scrubs starchy semen from its crease, names every stain. She could paint a history of betrayals: a miscarriage, a marriage gone putrid, a gangrenous love affair, all those men pushing and pushing— a face emptied of purpose, an iron to brace each atrocity.

Well, I think you're there now on this poem, Laurie. Perhaps you will be allowed to relax, huh? Let's see what the others say, but you get a thumbs-up from me! |
